Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Fleshy herbs.

Stems: Stems reddish purple, ascending to weakly erect from a short repent base, 30–50 cm long, 4–5 mm in diameter toward base, unbranched or with a few short lateral branches above middle, internodes 3–4(–7) cm long, moderately to densely strigillose, the hairs 0.2–0.4 mm long.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Whorled (2)3–5 per node. Blades oblong–lanceolate, narrowly elliptic–lanceolate, or sometimes narrowly oblanceolate, often slightly falcate, 4–7 cm long, 0.7–1.5(–1.8) cm wide. Apex attenuate to acuminate, sometimes lower leaves broadly obtuse. Base attenuate to narrowly cuneate. Surfaces strigillose, only sparsely so on upper surface; upper surfaces dark green; lower surfaces pale green, thinly firm–fleshy, drying chartaceous. Margins flat, sparsely ciliate. Palmately 3-veined, midrib strongly impressed, but lateral veins on upper surface only slightly so. Petioles 0.7–1.1 cm long, strigillose. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in fleshy spikes 1 to several, axillary and terminal, (3–)4–10 cm long, the rachis ca. 1.5 mm in diameter, glabrous, flowers moderately congested, peduncles 0.5–2 cm long, densely strigillose. Flowers bisexual (perfect), perianth absent. Each flower subtended by a peltate bract. Calyx (sepals) absent. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 2. Ovary superior, ovoid, 1-carpellate, 1-celled, apex oblique; ovules 1 per cell, orthotropous, erect; stigmas subterminal.

Fruit: Fruit ovoid; ca. 0.8 mm long; papillose–viscid with sessile glands. Seeds 1 per fruit; with scanty endosperm and copious; starchy perisperm.

Ploidy: 2n = 88

Habitat: Diverse mesic forest and occasionally wet forest.

Elevation Range: 1,060–2,000 m.
